01 — The brief

The problem it solves

Homeowners pricing a metal roof in Canada have three questions: what it should cost, which style suits their climate, and who can install it nearby. The answers are usually spread across manufacturer brochures, lead-gen forms and review sites with scores nobody can check.

The brief: one bilingual site that pairs a nationwide contractor directory with in-depth guides and interactive cost tools, ranks specialists only on disclosed facts, and says where every piece of data came from.

Steel Roofing Contractor Directory

150 company pages showing services, sectors and certification mentions found on each company’s own website, with the date checked.

Metal & Steel Leaders by Region

Regional rankings ordered by specialization, team size, years in business and locations, with the methodology at the top.

03 — How it's put together

Structure

Every page has an English original and a French mirror under /fr/, paired with hreflang in the sitemap: 13 province and territory pages, a Calgary metro hub with eight neighbourhood and town guides, five need-based guides, 150 company profiles, plus the directory, map, style guide and quote pages.

Under the hood

  • Static HTML pages with vanilla JavaScript on Netlify; directory filtering, sorting and the map all run in the browser.
  • Listings ship as a single data file of 4,293 records, each with English and French descriptions; map coordinates come from a separate GeoNames city file (CC BY 4.0).
  • Schema: Organization and WebSite on the homepage, RoofingContractor with PostalAddress on profiles, Article plus FAQPage on guides, FAQPage on Resources, AboutPage on About.
  • Leaflet 1.9.4 with markercluster over OpenStreetMap tiles; the shared scripts switch every UI string between English and French.

Details that matter

  • No star ratings anywhere: profiles link out to Google Maps, BBB and HomeStars rather than copying their scores.
  • Each researched profile names the website that was checked and the date, and labels findings as detected mentions, not endorsements.
  • Calculator assumptions sit on the page, down to the conservative 15% cooling saving the 50-year model uses against a published 10–25% range.

Published methodology and dated sourcing let a directory built from public records stay useful without inventing reviews or ratings.
